Lionel Messi has confirmed he will not travel with Argentina for next Tuesday’s clash against Ecuador, the closing fixture of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers. Instead, the Inter Miami star will return to Florida to prepare for the final stretch of the MLS season.
“I spoke with Leo [Scaloni]. He decided I should rest. I’m coming off an injury and, even though I feel good now, we prefer to avoid the trip and another match so I can get ready for what’s coming, which is very important," Messi said after Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela. "We’re fighting for MLS – it’s a priority. I hope to be in good shape.”

Messi admitted his recent fitness struggles played a role in the decision. The former Barcelona star has not been at 100 percent since picking up an injury during the Leagues Cup, and is prioritizing rest ahead of the remainder of the MLS season and the upcoming playoffs.
“That injury left me out for 15 days and broke my rhythm," Messi said. "I haven’t felt fully comfortable since… Now we have a busy run ahead, and I hope to finish the year strong and then start preseason well."

Head coach Lionel Scaloni also explained the move in his post-match press conference.
“He won’t travel to Ecuador. He finished exhausted. Honestly, he should have come off, but the emotion of the match and our plan for him to play the full game kept him on." he said. "He ended up very fatigued, and he deserves to spend this time with his family.”
